5 Mouthwatering Snacks to Enjoy in Konkan



Planning to visit the beautiful Konkan this rainy season? That’s a great choice! For those of you who can’t imagine a great monsoon vacation without lots of tea or coffee along with hot and spicy food, here are 5 of the best Maharashtrian and Konkani snacks to enjoy during your stay in Konkan.

Vada Pav

Undoubtedly one of Maharashtra’s most popular snacks. Made from potatoes and besan (gram flour), it can be a greatly appetizing and filling snack to be enjoyed any time of the day. You can enjoy the spicy taste of this ‘Indian version of burger’ in most hotels in Konkan as well as on many street joints while enjoying the monsoon.

Kanda Bhaji

Another delightful snack that you can’t miss while exploring Konkan is the kanda bhaji or onion pakoras. These are made of onion and gram flour and taste great when eaten with coconut chutney or tomato sauce. You can also eat it while sipping on a steaming cup of chai (tea) to keep you warm from the chilly winds in the rains.

Samosa is not a specialty of Konkan per say. However, it is a popular snack of the region. The Punjabi samosa and sadha samosa are the two varieties you can enjoy along with green chutney ( made of green chilli and coconut ) and tomato sauce.

Alu Vadi

Aluvadi is made from the stuffed rolls of alu ( Colocasia or Taro ) leaves and besan ( gram flour ). It is steamed and deep fried and seasoned with sesame seeds and coriander leaves. It is one of the specialties of Konkan and you will love its delicate, crispy feel and amazing taste.

Misal Pav

You must have heard about Puneri misal. Misal is one of the most popular snacks in Konkan as well. The word ‘misal’ means mixture. Misal is made by mixing usal - a spicy curry made of chana (gram) or watana (peas) etc. with farsan and garnished with coriander, sliced onion, lemon, etc. When eaten with pav (loaf of bread) it is a fingerlickingly tasty and filling snack.

Whether you have a lot of money to spend or are on a limited budget, you can savor on these popular and inexpensive Maharashtrian snacks while visiting Konkan during the monsoon season.
